Hello.
This is the long-winded, on-line, general, business-oriented edition of my life. The nice, tidy Word document with bulletted highlights, personal info and stuff like that is hiding in the expanded section that appears if you click on any 'MORE', below. Please do -- references and extracts from the info-packs are there, and some nice photos too. As you might expect, the originals of most documents are available for inspection.

Silver Sands Beach Resort, near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Reference & info-pack available
duration/year/age
1 year/'00-01/41
General Manager: Appointed by South Africa-based directors to manage a troubled hotel and scuba dive base in a beautiful location, a rural area outside Dar es Salaam (Three-star, 36 rooms, 42 staff, 400m of beach). Tidied up major administrative problems and caught up with much deferred maintenance to produce a comfortable hotel with friendly staff. Managed a renovation programme, handled importing and sourcing of materials and developed trading with the local village. Staff training, process management and marketing were fundamental to the work. Entirely self-reliant and self-motivated: Reported weekly by e-mail, my directors visited three times a year. Importantly, in a remote, foreign location, I enjoyed good staff and community relations. Swahili was a definite advantage. The position required good public relations and sound commonsense, some legal and financial skills, and durability! (Website)
Outcome: Insolvency followed riots in Zanzibar

9 months/'99-2000/40
Project Manager: Contracted by a visitor to Istanbul to set up the on-land side of a new Scuba operation. Recommended a building then negotiated its lease. Left alone holding funds with the instructions 'make me a hotel'. (Owner returned to the UK during reconstruction.) Achieved targets on-budget and on-time in a previously-dilapidated historic Quaker Mission house that is now a focus for operations and the envy of other operators. Developed the concept '…Not just fish!' to emphasise culturally-sensitive nature and to give the company a distinctive profile in the marketplace. Set up all administrative aspects of the business (registrations, permits, licensing, tax, purchasing and marketing, etc) and demonstrated personal resources and experience that surprised the owner. Worked well and heartily enjoyed the challenge of working (legally) in an unknown environment. Built a successful website (Website). Joined a local aid agency. Sent twice to India by the owners for materials. Learning Kiswahili.
Outcome: Task successfully completed

Orient Hostel, Istanbul, Türkiye
Reference available
2 years/'97-99/38
Genel Müdür (General Manager): Invited to take on management of a very busy hostel in a competitive environment at a time when change was required and in difficult working conditions on a two-year contract and work permit. Aimed to make the hostel a destination in its own right with the theme 'The Ottoman Lifestyle Lives On' with traditional Turkish food, belly dancing shows and water-pipe nights (hookah-type with apple tobacco) in the bar. Raised the profile of the hostel in the guidebooks. Managed renovations and increase of capacity to include 4 buildings of 140 beds, two cafés, two bars, two travel agencies and a deluxe wing. Developed relations with overseas groups, tour companies, and related businesses around Türkiye. Worked with our travel agency to develop and advertise 'kitset' tours. Produced events, marketing concepts, brochures and advertising for the hostel and travel agency. Built several successful websites (The Orient, Travel Agency and Side Hotel). I now speak clumsy but useful Turkish.
Outcome: Contract expired. Offered work in Paradise.

Contracted for a crisis management task and retained as Support Administrator (helpdesk manager) in a company that provided Internet access to many other smaller ISP's, network connectivity to major corporations and dial-up access to thousands of SO-HO and domestic customers dealing in particular with the tasks that had 'gone bad'. The job required a fully professional manner and the ability to train people to see a query through to resolution, developing the teamwork of experts. The position involved solid problem-solving skills, good technical knowledge and strong administrative skills as it managed quite a large team of enthusiastic and energetic technical helpdesk staff, was required to recognize trends in queries, and was needed to aggressively represent the needs of our customers to the company's more technically-minded Systems and Network groups and to Administration staff.
